Description: A personal favourite of the AquaLabs team, Downoi is characterised by its distinctive curly leaves. Under the appropriate conditions, Downoi can spread horizontally to form a carpet, which looks stunning in a larger aquarium. However, it is just as well suited to smaller aquariums as a midground plant.
Difficulty: As with all aquarium plants, Co2 injection and appropriate fertilisation are recommended for optimal health and growth. Generally considered a moderate difficulty plant, some experienced aquarists have had trouble bringing Downoi to its best form. Discussions among hobbyists tend to suggest that consistency in water parameters, and a well-rounded, complete fertiliser is key. From our personal experience, we have found that any nutrient deficiency will result in stunted growth. Keeping a regimented fertiliser routine is vital.
Emersed Growth: Growing Pogostemon Helferi emersed is trickier than most plants. Instead of producing various large and compact shoots, it tends to sprout various long, horizontal runners. In addition to this, the lower leaves tend to melt away or yellow after a period of time. However, it can certainly be done. Adequate misting and high humidity will result in steady growth.
