A fishless cycle builds the biological filter before anything lives in the aquarium. Nothing is exposed to ammonia or nitrite, you control every variable, and you can stock the tank properly the day it finishes. The method is simple, but dosing ammonia on its own will still leave you waiting weeks.
Why cycle without fish
In a fish-in cycle, the fish supply the ammonia. That works, but it means keeping livestock in water containing ammonia and nitrite for as long as the cycle takes, managing it with constant water changes, and stocking a few fish at a time for months afterwards.
A fishless cycle removes all of that. You supply the ammonia yourself, at a level you choose, and nothing is at risk while the colony builds. When it is finished you can add a full stock at once, because the filter is already sized for the load.
What you need
- A dechlorinator, to remove chlorine and chloramine from every drop of water that goes in: AquaLabs Vitality 300ml
- A controlled ammonia source: AquaLabs Fishless Start 300ml
- A bacterial culture to seed the filter: AquaLabs Nitro Cycle 20ml
- A liquid test kit that reads ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and KH: AquaLabs Master Test Kit
The method
Substrate, hardscape, filter, heater. The filter must run continuously from day one, because the colony grows on the media and media sitting in a box does nothing. Set the heater to 26–28 °C.
Chlorine and chloramine are added to tap water specifically to kill bacteria. Dosing a bacterial culture into untreated water kills it on contact, and this is the single most common reason a cycle appears to fail before it starts.

This is the food source for the cycle. Two parts per million is the target: enough to grow a colony capable of handling a real stocking load, without going so high that it inhibits the bacteria you are trying to grow.
Test after dosing to confirm you have actually hit 2 ppm rather than assuming it.
AquaLabs Fishless Start is an ammonium chloride solution with added essential nutrients to support the developing bacterial colony. Far more controllable than dropping in fish food and waiting for it to decay, which fouls the water and gives an ammonia level you cannot predict or repeat.
Without seeding, you are waiting for nitrifying bacteria to arrive by chance and multiply from almost nothing. This is the difference between a cycle measured in days and one measured in months.
AquaLabs Nitro Cycle combines fast-growing heterotrophic bacteria with true nitrifying autotrophs, which colonise the filter media and form the permanent biological filter.
Testing is the only way to know where you are, because a cycle is invisible. Record the numbers rather than trusting your memory of yesterday's colour.
Ammonia falls first. Nitrite then appears and climbs, which is the first real sign the cycle is working. Nitrite then falls in turn as the second group of bacteria establishes.
Once the ammonia from your initial dose has been fully processed and nitrite has also fallen to zero, your aquarium is cycled. The bacteria have converted the entire dose through to nitrate.
Test nitrate before adding fish. If it is above 20 ppm, do a water change to bring it down, and remember to dechlorinate the replacement water. In a well planted aquarium this often is not necessary, because the plants will have taken up the nitrate as it was produced.
Add your fish promptly once you are done. The colony you have built is sized to the ammonia you were feeding it, and with no fish and no dosing it will begin to shrink within days.
Reading your results
Every fishless cycle passes through the same four stages. Knowing which one you are in tells you whether to wait or to investigate.
Building a stronger cycle
Completing the initial ammonia reduction gives you a working biological filter. If you want a more robust one before stocking heavily, you can keep going.
Each time ammonia reaches zero, dose it back to 2 ppm. The colony responds to the food available to it, so continued dosing builds a larger population of ammonia-removing bacteria than a single reduction will. Over time the bacteria become progressively better at removing ammonia, and each dose disappears faster than the one before it.
Repeated dosing after the initial reduction. Early doses may take days to clear. With a well developed colony the same 2 ppm can disappear within hours.
This is worth doing if you are planning a heavily stocked aquarium, or a species that will not tolerate any ammonia at all. If you are stocking lightly and adding fish gradually, the initial reduction is enough.
Why 2 ppm alone will not make it fast
This is worth being direct about. Dosing ammonia to 2 ppm gives your bacteria something to eat. It does not make them grow quickly. If everything else in the tank is working against them, you can hold a perfect 2 ppm for six weeks and still not be cycled.
Nitrifying bacteria are slow-growing and genuinely fussy, and their growth rate is set by conditions rather than by food supply alone. The variables that actually control the timeline are:
- Temperature. Bacterial metabolism slows sharply in cool water. A tank at 20 °C can take several times longer than the same tank at 27 °C. Raising the heater during cycling costs nothing.
- pH. Below 6.5 nitrification slows significantly, and below 6.0 it can stall almost completely. Many fishless cycles that appear dead are simply sitting at a pH the bacteria struggle to work in.
- KH. Nitrification consumes alkalinity, so KH falls steadily as the cycle runs. If it reaches zero, pH can crash and slow the cycle. Test KH every few days, not just at the start.
- Oxygen. Nitrifiers are aerobic. Good surface agitation and strong flow through the filter matter more than most people expect.
- Surface area. The colony can only grow as large as the surface you give it. A half-empty filter caps the size of the biological filter you can build.
- Seeding. Starting from an established culture rather than from nothing is the single largest factor of all.
Aquasoil deserves a specific warning here. Most aquasoils actively strip KH and pull pH down into the low sixes. That is excellent for plants and shrimp, and works directly against you during cycling, so expect a longer timeline in a soil-based scape and watch KH closely.
Top up carbonate hardness with AquaLabs KH Plus if it drops away, and fill your filter with a highly porous biological media such as AquaLabs Nitro Nest to maximise the surface available for colonisation.

What stalls a fishless cycle
Common mistakes
- Dosing ammonia far above 2 ppm. More food does not mean faster growth. Very high ammonia, and the very high nitrite that follows it, inhibits the bacteria you are trying to establish. Cycles stalled at high nitrite are almost always over-dosed cycles.
- Water changes to "fix" a high reading. There are no fish at risk. Changing water removes the food supply and sets you back. The only exception is a genuine over-dose you need to dilute.
- Zeolite or ammonia-removing resin in the filter. It strips the ammonia straight back out. Remove it for the duration. Activated carbon is fine and can stay in.
- UV sterilisers, ozone, protein skimmers and filter socks. Newly dosed bacteria are free-floating until they attach to a surface, and these will remove them first. Switch off, or remove socks, for 48 hours after dosing.
- Rinsing filter media under the tap. Chlorinated water destroys the colony you have spent weeks building. Rinse in old tank water only.
- Trusting an old test kit. Reagents degrade with age and heat. A false ammonia reading sends people into unnecessary water changes that set the cycle back further. Verify anything that looks wrong.
The short version
- Set the tank up fully, filter and heater running, at 26–28 °C
- Dechlorinate with Vitality before anything else goes in
- Dose Fishless Start to 2 ppm ammonia and confirm with a test
- Seed the filter with Nitro Cycle
- Test ammonia and nitrite daily and record the results
- Keep pH above 6.5 and KH above 4 dKH throughout
- Fill the filter with porous biological media and keep oxygenation high
- The cycle is complete when ammonia and nitrite both read zero
- For a stronger colony, keep re-dosing to 2 ppm after the initial reduction
- Check nitrate, water change if it is above 20 ppm, then stock
Done properly, a fishless cycle asks for a few minutes a day and a bit of patience, and delivers a filter that can handle a real stocking load the moment it is finished, with nothing having been put at risk to get there.
